What is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a South African environmental regulation introduced by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

In simple terms, EPR places the responsibility for end-of-life management of products on the manufacturer or importer, not the end user.

For the lighting industry, this means:

  • Reporting lighting products placed on the market

  • Contributing to approved recycling schemes

  • Ensuring proper waste management of electronic components

  • Reducing landfill impact from decommissioned luminaires

EPR ensures lighting products are responsibly managed long after installation.

Lightnet’s Commitment to Compliance

Lightnet (Pty) Ltd is fully compliant with South Africa’s EPR regulations.

As a registered producer, Lightnet:

  • Accurately reports all qualifying products introduced into the market

  • Contributes financially to approved Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs)

  • Supports structured recycling and waste management processes

  • Takes accountability for the environmental lifecycle of our luminaires

For specifiers, this means confidence that your lighting selections align with national environmental legislation.

Supporting Refurbishment & Retrofit Projects

Lighting upgrades and refurbishments often raise an important question:

What happens to the old luminaires being removed?

Through our collaboration with approved recycling partners such as eWASA Recycling Authority (ERA), Lightnet can assist in facilitating:

  • Collection of decommissioned luminaires

  • Responsible recycling of electronic components

  • Proper documentation of waste streams

  • Reduction of landfill disposal

Where Lightnet products are specified in refurbishment projects, we can coordinate with ERA to support responsible disposal of existing lighting installations.

Why This Matters for Architects & Engineers

✔ Regulatory Assurance

Specification aligned with national EPR legislation.

✔ Strengthened Sustainability Narrative

Supports environmental reporting and green building strategies.

✔ Reduced Project Risk

Minimises reputational and compliance exposure related to improper e-waste disposal.

✔ Simplified Coordination

Assistance in facilitating responsible recycling during upgrade projects.

✔ Long-Term Manufacturer Support

As a South African manufacturer focused on the professional project market, Lightnet remains accessible for lifecycle support, not just initial supply.

Lighting with Long-Term Responsibility

Lightnet has always engineered products for the professional and project-driven market — prioritising durability, long-term performance, and manufacturer accountability.

EPR compliance strengthens this commitment by ensuring responsibility extends beyond installation and into responsible end-of-life management.

If you are working on a refurbishment or retrofit project and would like to incorporate structured recycling support, please contact your Lightnet representative to discuss coordination options.

Lightnet (Pty) Ltd
